Partners, Positive in Disability
West Midlands Police and Shaw Trust are pleased to invite you to attend to a conference entitled “Partners, Positive in Disability”.
This conference is aimed primarily at Senior HR Managers and Diversity Managers although you may wish to invite other senior colleagues.
A number of Forces have already expressed interest in the partnership between Shaw Trust, West Midlands Police and JobCentrePlus and the aim of this conference therefore, is to highlight out successful partnership experiences and to suggest ways in which interested Forces can set up their own arrangements.

Over the last 2 years, West Midlands Police has operated a partnership with the Shaw Trust, a national charity specialising in supporting individuals with disabilities into employment. Historically, people with disabilities have been under represented in the Force, and this was an area for concern. A positive action initiative was therefore agreed in partnership with the Shaw Trust. In the first year alone, we increased the number of staff who are disabled by 20% and to provide the necessary support mechanisms we also engaged with JobCentrePlus to fast track “Access to Work” applications. This has proved beneficial to both clients and managers alike.
Two full-time Shaw Trust members of staff have now been seconded to the Force, their objective being the recruitment, placement and support of disabled people into employment with us.
The partnership has proved highly successful and has been recognised both locally and nationally through the Minister for the Disabled.
By December this year Forces are required to produce a Disability Equality Scheme which will need to include “Arrangements for Employment”. Our partnership approach has assisted with this in terms of recruitment, training, development, support and retention of staff with disabilities.
The conference will take place on 30th October 2006 at the West Midlands Police Conference Centre, Tally Ho!, and you are cordially invited to attend along with other senior members of your organisation.
The event will last from 10:00 – 16:00 hrs with a variety of guest speakers and the opportunity to share best practice with other colleagues.
